കരുനാഗപ്പള്ളി : ദുരന്തമനുഭവിച്ച സഹോദരങ്ങളെ കൈപിടിച്ചുയർത്താൻ സഹായിച്ച നമ്മുടെ ആലപ്പാട്ടെ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളെ ആലപ്പാട്ടെ രാജാക്കന്മാരെന്നു തന്നെ നമുക്ക് വിളിക്കാതെ വയ്യ….ആരും പേടിക്കുന്ന ദുരന്തമുഖത്തേക്ക് പെട്ടെന്ന് ഓടിയെത്തിയ ഇവരോട് എങ്ങനെയാണ് നന്ദി പറയേണ്ടതെന്നറിയില്ല…

വിലപ്പെട്ട ഓരോ നിമിഷവും ഓരോ ജീവന് വേണ്ടി അവർ കഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു. ഒരു പാടു കണ്ണുനീർ കാണേണ്ടി വന്നു, മനസ്സൊട്ടും തളരാതെ ഊർജ്ജസ്വലരായി അവർ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു…. കടലിന്റെ മക്കൾക്ക് വെള്ളത്തെ പേടിയില്ല, അവർ കടലിലെ സിംഹ കുട്ടികളാണ്, അവരുടെ ഓരോ നിമിഷവും ജീവന്റെ വിലകളായി മാറി, അവർ നമ്മുടെ നാടിനുവേണ്ടി നൽകിയ ഓരോ നിമിഷത്തിനും നമ്മൾ ഒരായിരം ബിഗ് സല്യൂട്ട് നൽകിയേ മതിയാകൂ…

അങ്ങ് ചെങ്ങന്നൂരിൽ വെള്ളം കയറിയപ്പോൾ ആലപ്പാടിന്റെ തീരങ്ങളിൽ കൂടി എല്ലാവരോടും സഹായം ചോദിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഒരു ഓട്ടോ കടന്നു പോയീ….. ഓട്ടോയിൽ മൈക്ക് ഒക്കെ വച്ച് സഹായം അഭ്യർത്ഥിച്ചു കൊണ്ടങ്ങനെ….. അതാണ് ആലപ്പാട്….. അതു തന്നെയാണ് ആലപ്പാട് ജനത……. എല്ലാവർക്കും ബിഗ് സല്യൂട്ട്……

വിശ്വാസവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകൾക്ക് മുമ്പുള്ള, ആലപ്പാടും ചെങ്ങന്നൂരും തമ്മിലുള്ള ചരിത്ര കഥ കൂടി ചിലപ്പോൾ ആലപ്പാട് നിവാസികൾ ഇപ്പോൾ ഓർക്കാൻ സാധ്യതയുണ്ട്.

Alappad fishers turn heroes in chengannur @ INDIAN EXPRESS

They all came to Chengannur with a mission. Around 550 fishermen from Alappad panchayat in Kollam district descended on the flood-ravaged town in Alappuzha district with 149 boats they normally use to navigate the seas. It was their own way of offering a thanksgiving to the people for having stood with their community during the 2004 Tsunami.

The fishermen from Alappad, a strip of land sandwiched between the roar ing sea and serene backwaters, have withstood the vagaries of nature, with tragedies only toughening their resolve. The tsunami waves tore apart their lives and claimed 149 of them in 2004. If that was not enough, Cyclone Ockhi, which hit Kerala coast on last November 29, added to their misery.

But the Alappad fishermen were the first to rush to Chengannur to save the thousands marooned by Pampa river’s rage. It followed a SoS call made by the Chengannur Mahadeva Temple Devaswom’s secretary to the Araya Samajam leaders in Alappad August 15. At 8 am, six country boats were sent to Chengannur in trucks, along with all equipment including lifebuoy, food, dress and essentials. Another team started at 1.30 pm on the same day. They have spent 7.5 lakh on their own for rescue operations.
